They deserve medals of honor: Activities in September in support of the Cuban 5

September Activities in Washington D.C. and San Francisco to Mark the 16th Anniversary of the Arrest of the Cuban 5

five cuban heroes 12 From September 12 to October 8, supporters of the Cuban 5 will be organizing activities in cities all over the world and in the United States to bring attention to their 16 years of cruel imprisonment.

While Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez are back in Cuba after serving their entire sentences, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramón Labañino and Antonio Guerrero remain in U.S. Prisons. These three men are paying a high price for defending their country against terrorism. Instead of the continuation of their imprisonment they deserve to receive medals of honor for their actions. It is long overdue for President Obama to negotiate in good faith with Cuba to reach a humanitarian solution to this case and allow them to return to their loved ones.

nullThe International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 is returning to Washington D.C. after 5 days of activities for the Five in June. Members of the Committee, other solidarity friends and personalities will visit Capitol Hill to follow up on their June visits and organize other activities, including a rally in front of the White House and a Public Forum. Also in San Francisco, CA the committee is organizing a Bicycle Ride in Support of the Cuban 5.

15th Anniversary of the Unjust Imprisonment of the Cuban Five

freethefive breaking the silence

September 12 marks the 15th anniversary of the imprisonment by the U.S. of five Cuban patriots, whose only “crime” was informing U.S. authorities of terrorist attacks against Cuba being launched from U.S. soil. The Cuban Five, as they are known worldwide, are Fernando González Llort, René González Sehwerert, Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo and Ramón Labañino Salazar.

A related anniversary took place September 4, the 16th anniversary of the death of Fabio Di Celmo, a Montrealer of Italian origin killed in 1997 by a bomb set by anti-Cuban terrorists in the Copacabana Hotel in Havana where he was staying.

To mark this occasion, many activities  took place around the world to demand the immediate release of the Cuban Five. In Quebec and Canada, activities took  place in Quebec City, Montreal, the Outaouais, Toronto, Windsor, Vancouver and in several other cities.

The Cuban FiveThe return to Cuba of the four anti-terrorist fighters who remain imprisoned in the United States is a priority for Rene Gonzalez, who started the procedures to renounce his U.S. citizenship yesterday in this capital. “Until they all are here we must continue fighting (…) They will resist, they will not yield,” Rene told the reporters after beginning the procedures to renounce his citizenship at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, accompanied by his lawyer Philip Horowitz.

The anti-terrorist fighter was detained in 1998 along with Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, and Ramon Labañino, for monitoring terrorist groups that organized, financed and executed actions from Miami that have killed more than 3,300 Cubans.

Howard University School of Law Hosts Forum on the Cuban Five

Washington, DC, Nov. 13, 2012: Howard University School of Law Forum

Unjustly imprisoned in the U.S. for Defending Cuba: The Case of the Cuban Five

Wrongly imprisoned now for 14 years, the Cuban Five are not widely known in the United States, yet the outcome of their case will have a profound impact on the U.S. justice system and U.S.-Cuba relations. At the heart of their struggle is the fundamental and constitutional right of a defendant to a fair trial, and the right of Cuba to defend itself from terrorism. There is a movement in the U.S. and worldwide to demand their freedom.
