cuba develops vaccine for prostate cancerCuban scientists are advanced in the development of a therapeutic vaccine against prostate cancer, a scourge that causes older men more than 2000 deaths per year in Cuba, said a researcher.

This project has entered its third phase having overcome the first two stages, in which encouraging results were recorded in stopping the progression of the disease and even reversing it , explained scientist Roberto Basulto.

This vaccine is given in seven injections and the body develops antibodies to the peptide , Basulto, head of the research team, said.

Not a preventive vaccine, but is intended to improve the quality of life of patients

Basulto and his colleagues at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Camagüey, 530 kilometers east of Havana, stressed that it is not a preventive vaccine, but is intended to improve the quality of life of patients.

The third phase of tests, which will take at least five years, will involve some 400 patients, and must provide specific information on its effectiveness thereby allowing the Cuban vaccine to be compared with other existing treatments in the world, which are based on different principles.

Currently in Cuban hospitals a foreign vaccine that inhibits the level of the pituitary hormone production that causes the disease is applied.

A scourge in the Caribbean

In 2013, Cuba recorded 2,793 deaths from prostate cancer, a disease that affects mostly men over 50 years, according to the Health Statistical Yearbook 2013.

More than 2,100 new cases are diagnosed each year in the island. It is the second leading cause of death among Cubans after lung and respiratory cancer, in a country famous for its snuff.

Cuba is located in a geographic area with a high incidence of prostate cancer, which is the Caribbean. Although no one knows exactly what causes prostate cancer, some other risk factors for this disease are known, such as age, race, geographic area, hereditary and genetic factors and possible lifestyles and eating habits , explains Basulto.

The Chinese population, even with more than one billion people, has one of the lowest incidence

The Chinese population, even with more than one billion people, has one of the lowest incidence and this could be related to their healthier eating habits, added the scientist, who has been working in research since 1988 and was director of the subsidiary of Camagüey , which together with the Havana and Sancti Spiritus, formed the CIGB system of the island.

The situation is dramatic in Cuba, as its population is aging at a rapid pace.  With a life expectancy of 78 years, Cubans are the oldest in Latin America and the number of people prone to the disease will be greater, experts say.

A quarter century after its creation, the biotechnology Camagüey center focuses on the research and production of products for animals and plants.

Along with their counterparts in Havana and Sancti Spiritus (center), it forms the trident island biotechnology.

Its flagship product is the HeberNen, which protects plants against nematodes, microscopic organisms affecting the roots of crops under cover.

The Cuban biotechnology industry exports about $ 900 million annually, the second largest item in selling products abroad after nickel.

  1. The seemingly limitless capacity of the Cuban revolution to create medical innovations always marvels me particularly because of the huge sacrifices that it necessarily makes because of the US economic and cultural blockade.

Apart from the sacrifices made due to the US blockade on research and development, the huge investments that must be made to produce these medical wonders such as its creation of a product to slow the growth of prostrate cancer among others also impose trade-off costs in consumption of goods and services that Cubans may have to forego.

However, Cuba’s ability to develop a myriad of medical technologies and products such as its vaccines against advanced lung cancer, diabetes and now against prostrate cancer shows beyond any doubt the capacity of its revolution to unleash the research skills and capabilities of its people. Similarly, Cuba’s recent success as the first country on earth to have prevented the transmission of HIV-AIDS from mother to child as declared by the WHO is another major victory of its revolution against ill health and underdevelopment that imperialism and its reactionary oligarchy made impossible for its people prior to the revolution in 1959.

Finally, I believe that the foregoing medical innovations and successes in health care services in Cuba are undoubtedly the result of the revolution that prioritizes medical research and health care for its people. However, as important as these revolutionary successes are for the Cuban people, it is equally important that it must be recognized that these medical achievements are also for humanity because as internationalists, the Cubans have made and will always make these achievements available to humanity in all parts of the world.

For sure, the Cubans can prioritize medical research, education, economic development among other programs prioritized by its revolution because the IMF and foreign powers like the US and Germany cannot impose austerity policies on its sovereign government like they do in Jamaica, Greece and other countries they have made poor and dependent. That is how revolution builds and protects sovereignty and independence. Cuba does NOT have to pass or fail IMF tests because thank goodness, Cuba has freed itself nearly 60 years ago from the clutches of the IMF and imperialism.

It is impossible not to conclude that Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and yes North America need their own revolutions to unleash further medical and other achievements that like Cuba before its revolution, the oligarchies in these countries create obstacles that make it impossible for them to achieve these successes in medicine and other spheres of life.

    Forward Ever, Backward Never Cuba!

Peace if you are willing to fight for it!!
